The Memorandum of Understanding signed between Tegemeo Institute and the East African Grain Council creates a framework for collaboration that will improve research and analysis of agricultural trade, policy and advocacy. It will also provide for joint sharing of evidence and market intelligence to create a more supportive environment for agricultural and grain sector value chains in Kenya and the Eastern and Southern Africa region.

The MOU has been necessitated by a need to strengthen policy processes nationally and within the region through research and trade, a need to improve regional commodity flow and enhance regional food security, as well as a need to enhance information and intelligence sharing that will spur policy dialogues.

It is expected that this collaboration will fortify the use of evidence-based policy advocacy for the grain sector in Kenya and the region beyond, in a bid to influence policy reforms in the grain sub-sector. It will also provide a platform for thought leaders to influence policy formulation, besides strengthening capacity of policymakers, to help in the formulation of appropriate policies. Research will also be conducted to facilitate investment and business decision-making for instance in the areas of market trend forecasts and outlook, market intelligence, assessing viability of grain business opportunities.
